Beds these days are much more than simple sheets and blankets. The main change in recent years has been to give a bed lots of light layers rather than heavy blankets and duvets. Layers are very practical as you can use more or less of them in the night depending on the temperature. If it's cold you always have another layer to hand and if it's hot you can throw them all off until you are left with just a sheet. Of course the layers make the bed look great too provided you choose the right elements and dress your bed well.

1. A Great Base

To make the most comfortable bed you have to start with a great mattress - a lumpy old mattress that slumps in the middle is never going to give you a great looking bed (or a good night's sleep for that matter). So getting that right is critical.

Once you have your firm mattress base, cover it with a mattress protector to keep the mattress clean and in great condition for the length of its life (10 years max)

Next you may want to add a mattress pad, maybe a featherbed cover or a memory foam mattress cover to give a softer sleeping surface that molds to your body and relieves pressure points as you sleep.

2. Sheets and Covers

Choose smooth high-cotton sheets with a good thread count (anything between 180 and 500) to fit on top of your mattress. If choosing a bottom fitted sheet remember to include the height of the mattress cover and pad when measuring the depth of the mattress for a smooth fit.

You can then use a duvet and duvet cover or have a quilt or comforter over a top bed sheet. Choose sheets and duvet cover or quilt/comforter in coordinating colors and patterns.

3. Final Touches

Add pillows and pillow shams to match or coordinate with your sheets and top cover.

Finally dress the bed with a throw or two and plenty of cushions to give the bed a cosy inviting look.

4. Make it Easy

Of course if you choose all these elements separately it can be difficult to get a well-dressed bed but these days there are plenty of ready-made bedding ensembles that you can choose from to make sure that your bed has the right layered designer look. Choose a set which has many elements included or one where you buy the basics and can then add to it as required (and as budget permits).

While both the bed spread and comforter are used to cover the bed, and keep you warm at night, they both have very noticeable differences. If you care to take notice, you will find that the comforter is quite fluffy, and full of stuffing. The comforter is also thick, and can even be heavier than a bed spread is. If you are ever to wear hole in your comforter, you will see that there is stuffing inside, and even sometimes there are feathers.

While the bed spread and comforter are quite different, you may still want to learn a little more about the bed spread. A bed spread is always thin, and sometimes referred to as a coverlet. You would be more apt to use a bed spread in the summer and warmer months, and pull the comforter out of storage during the cooler months. That is how different the weights are in the two. You will be able to tell quite a difference sleeping under a bed spread when it is cold outside, if you are used to sleeping under a comforter. A bed spread is not stuffed with any stuffing, but will at times have a thin batting between the two layers of the top and bottom, kind of like a quilt. You will also find bed spreads that are as thin as a blanket, with only one layer of fabric used to make the whole thing.

Deciding which you prefer between the bed spread and comforter will be a personal preference. However, it is not unreasonable to own one of each, nor is it odd to use one or the other all year round. You should decide how you would be the most comfortable sleeping, and go with that choice. Some people do use the comforter year round, even in the warmer months in hotter climates. However, these people also probably keep their home quite cool when it is hot outside, and like the look of the comforter on the bed rather than the bed spread. There are also some that prefer the bed spread year round and go with that choice. You will have to make the choice for yourself. However, you now know the difference between the two, and will be able to choose accordingly.

I read the reviews prior to purchasing the bedding so I did know the small blue decorative pillow would be ivory, not blue. Although I think I would like the pillow in the blue color better, I love the look of the set overall. The sheen appearance really gives an elegant look and the colors are very modern. This set is a perfect balance for couples who do not want too girly or too masculine of a look. The small pillow has a ruffle and the comforter has pleats allowing for some feminine presence however the striping, colors and clean lines bring a handsome look.

I painted the wall behind our bed a dark chocolate and the other three walls a lighter version of the blue in the bedding. With simple chocolate drapes, the room looks like a high end hotel room. The feel of the comforter is pleasant and the ability to machine wash it is awesome!
